Plants and Greater than/Less Than




We learned about labeling and the parts of a plant. At my school we have do to displays in the hallway. Last year the hallway displays took up way too much time so this year I decided that I would hang clothespins up with the kiddos name so that each time when we changed displays all I have to do is just slip the kiddos work in their pin and go! No more tape rolls and staples!!!!!!!!!!!

Here is our language Display

We are studying nouns right now so we did Nancy Noun! ( My team mate did Victor Ver but I forgot to snap a pic!) The larger green slips are proper nouns so each child just wrote their name on the slip. The round circles at the top of Nancy's dress are persons, the longer green slips on her dress are things and animals, and the stockings are places. Each child had to come up with 2 of each kind of nound that we talked about and they glued it on her dress. The students then picked on word and wrote a sentence with that word on the sentence strips

Our Plant Writing

So we just finshed out plant unit last week and I thought that I would share our writing. I sure that you have seen some of these charts floating around on pinterest! They are so cute and can easily be adapted.
At my school we use the four square method for teaching writing.  You can read more on 4 square here. One the first day we discuss our topic in depth and write our topic on our 4 square chart.
On Tuesday we talk about the first column which is can. We make a list of what plants can do and then on the four chart chart we say Plants can and the kiddos pick one of the words for the can column to complete their sentence
On Wednesday we do the next column which is have and lastly we do the are column.

Reading Logs

This year I have started a reading log program to go along with the Book It program. This is my first year during a reading log but not my first year with Book It. The first year that I did Book It many of my parents did not participate because they did not have transportation to go to the library. This year I decided that I was going to do a book loan system so parents can have something to read to their kids. During Back to School Night and Meet the Teacher Night I introduced parents to the reading program and reading logs. The parents have to sign a contract to in order to check out books.


 
To fill my book baskets I used books that I have gotten for ebay. I buy a lot of my books off ebay in huge lots for dirt cheap prices.

Here are how the books are stored

 
On each book is a note from me that tells when the book is to be returned
I created a list in Excel with all my book titles on it and printed it off. Each week I just simply write the students name beside the title that checked it out. When students bring back their book I highlight their number

 
The parents know that if they do not send back their books on the day that I request then they can no longer check out books from me

Have you heard of a Vocabulary Parade?

MY school is going to participate in its first ever vocabulary parade. I have never heard of this so I decided to check out what it is all about! For those of you who don't know what it is I will try to explain it. The concept is that is child gets a vocabulary word and students have to define their word and develop a costume that illustrates their words.


Has anyone done a vocabulary parade before, I would love some ideas
Since we are studying animals right now I think that our words will center around animals.

We are going to host our parade on Monday, Oct 31 and I will post the pics from ours.

Attention please! Attention this is a must read!

If you answered yes then Study Ladder is for you. Study Ladder is a free website, you do have to create an account, that allows you to indiviualize skills for each of your students.
There is a plethora of topics that you can choose from in math, literacy, science, numeracy, health, music, art, language and white board lessons.

Once you set up your class list the students will be able to access the site and their targeted skills from school as well from home.
After students have completed a targeted skill the site tracks the process and show you how well they are progessing!
You will also find printables and posters for most of the skills to go along with the interactive games.

A must when planning for literacy!

Readworks is an amazing website that has lesson plans for each day as well as trade books to go along with each lesson. You do have to register but it is free to do so. The site is geared toward K-6 teachers.
Once  on the site you can find lessons in the Concepts of Comprehension such as Voice, Cause and Effect, Author's Purpose, Vocabulary, Fact and Opinion and so much more.
Once you click on a catagory you will see the lesson plans that are available on the topic  already organized for each grade. It gives you the lesson plan, picks out your vocabulary words, tells you how to teach the word ( lays out exactly what you say and how the students should respond), provides print outs needed for the lesson, and aligns to the standards.

I use the printouts to make anchor charts out of.

You can also find reading passages that you can download and questions that go along with the passage!

If you find an lesson that you want to use you can save it in Your Binder for easy access.

STudy Bags

I also send home study bags to help my struggling students as well as those that need enrichment. Study bags are really a simple concept just a gallon sized ziplock bag and the students' number written on the front. Inside each study bag are materials to help the student master a certain skill. If the student is struggling with alphabet skills then inside their bag with be a game or activity to help strengthen that skill. The student will continue to have activities to support that skill until they master it.
The students check out the study bag on Monday and keep it all week and return the bag on Friday. Since I purchase most of the things in the bags myself the parents have to sign up to receive a study bag and I discuss with them what I expect from them. The parent must agree to use the materials and return them on the expected day or else they will not recieve any more bags.
Since most parents don't speak "school" language I include a note that tells them activities that they can do each night and how to teach their child the skill.
Some things that I include in the study bag are books, puzzles, file folder games, flashcards, manipulatives and so forth.
These have really helped my students to grow and the parents love the communication and the skill packs!

Math Stations

Here is a quick snapshot of what some of my math stations look and how I organize all the manipulatives inside their math bucket for ease of use and access.
Each math bucket has a station number that matches the number on the student rotation cards 
Inside each bucket are the materials for each station
Here is a look at some of the center buckets and how the materials are organized as well as the center in use

Number Pattern Blocks and Counting
Counting using a 100s chart, beans and clothespins.
Students then get a bag and find the numbers on their slips and color the number on the chart

 To elimate arguing over what get what I also try to color code the manipulatives that the kiddos get. Each students material will have a color dot.
